More Badminton Boom Time For Harrogate Racquets Club the home of Badminton England’s North Yorkshire Performance Centre (NYPC)
This season has started strongly; we have Ross Overton, Jennie Dickson and Rae Lamour now playing in senior Yorkshire county games and 12 junior players representing the county in under 11 to the under 17 age competitions. Also congratulations to Andrew Hards for being selected for the Deaf squad to represent England in the Four Nations held in Paris. All of our performance centre squads are showing healthy increases (though there is always room for more!) we have made significant progress in the two years since becoming a Badminton England performance centre.
For the second year running we have entered a junior team in the Harrogate League 3rd division with Zoe Gill, Karen Lam, Erica Chall, Elise Bell, Mike Winchester, Alex Hannam, Adam Dewar, Joshua Brown and Callum Jackson. We continue to try improve quality and quantity of badminton in our locality. Many of the Performance players have been filtered into the local clubs including Dale Hall and Firs Road. This is one of the key objectives of the NYPC.
The Big News is we have a new sponsorship with Yonex and Maurice Robinson Sports. There is only one other Performance Centre in the country that is sponsored by Yonex so we are very honoured and will strive to live up to their high expectations making them proud of their sponsorship. Harrogate Racquets Club, the home of the NYPC, will be hosting a Yonex/Maurice Robinson demonstration evening on the 20th December with opportunities to try out some of the latest Yonex products at discounted rates and get some tips from our experienced coaches. There will also be competitions and lots of fun activities. The junior session starts at 5.30pm to 7.30pm with the adult session from 7.30pm
North Yorkshire Performance Centre Work in Progress
Our partnerships with local schools continue successfully. St John Fishers and Ripon Grammar after- school clubs remain well attended with Ripon Nomads Badminton Club running the Ripon program improving participation in the Ripon area. We have also been working with Leeds University for one year providing an important transition vehicle for youngster wishing to maintain the link with NYPC whilst continuing their education. Our elite players hold one session at Gateways School, Harewood, where we are hopeful of replicating our successful school partnership model in the future. Thanks to Lynne Heaton & Ken Hainsworth badminton in Pateley Bridge is on the up with 16 children attending their Friday sessions. The NYPC is supporting with help, equipment, coaches and BE advice. Four local badminton clubs now fall under the NYPC umbrella.
