National Festival of Music for Youth 2017

Musicians from St. John Fisher took part in the National Festival of Music for Youth in Symphony Hall, Birmingham yesterday evening. Following a successful qualifying performance at the regional heat in Wakefield, the school Concert Band were invited as one of only 12 school concert bands in the country. The band performed two pieces, Vesuvius by the American composer Frank Ticheli and Mambo! from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein.

Music mentors Matthew Harrison and Andy Grappy spoke of the bands ‘considerable skills’ in their remarks with the programme ‘fizzing and bubbling with energy’. Up against a significant number of older bands with many of the schools from the private sector, the Concert Band performed brilliantly on the day in one of the finest concert halls in Europe. We now wait to see if we receive a sought after invitation to the schools’ proms in November which are held in the Royal Albert Hall.
