Y7 Boys Rugby Festival
Massive congratulations to all the lads who came second in Tuesday’s festival. This competition was a real testament to those lads who have trained all year and made real progress, from the first match against Rodillian and Garforth back in September and being heavily beaten to now tasting victory through hard work and improvement in the previous 5 months.
Player of the tournament Huw Conway was outstanding, running through, round and over any opposition in his way, as did Callum (who has been nominated most improved player this season well done). Following dispatching Rossett quite easily 10 – 5 with an outstanding individual try from Oscar Colley to seal victory, SJF went on to beat Rodillian 5 – 0 in a rematch from September, a great performance.
Importantly and most impressively SJF with extra players saw players play for the opposition to even numbers up and keep games competitive – even Finn managed to score against his own team!! Played in a great atmosphere the competition was recognised by visiting staff in positive feedback sent to the school – a credit to our boy’s attitude and manner – well done lads.
However, back to the competition – winners and losers! A tough game against Featherstone saw SJF’s first loss 0 – 10, but the boys bounced back to convincingly beat King James 15 – 10 with some quality rucking and tackling from Edward Ward and Austin. Another notable tournament performance must go to Vinnie and Alex lambert, who both ran strong lines and supported their team mates well in the contact. An amazing result but importantly superb improvement – I think Eddie Jones may be on the phone!
1st – Featherstone
2nd – St John Fisher
3rd – King James
4th – Rossett
5th – Rodillian
A big thanks also to Eion Harrison who refereed and Mr Rowlance who ran the event.
Y9 Boys Football County Cup Semi-Finals v Ripon Outwood 3 v 3 SJF (Lost 0-3 pens)
What a game. If story lines could be written for the movies this would be one of them with an unhappy ending! Arriving complacent, in an overconfident mood this was a game of 2 halves! Starting slowly and with an OG to boot (no names Alex) SJF went 2-0 down early on with no desire or belief SJF had beaten themselves before they had started. We needed half time!
What a managerial team talk! DJ popped up to score the first, well taken. A certain penalty/slight foul was committed by Sharky restoring a 2 goal deficit straight after the elation of being back in the game! 1-3! Then we started to play, Harry Hudson hitting the woodwork, just over the bar it was one way traffic, finally Dan R scored with a superb free kick into the bottom corner, then minutes later Dylan tapped in to make it 3-3! There was only one winner, was there? – into extra time but the ball would not go in! dramatic, unbelievable, extraordinary – but penalties it was.
No contest strong penalties by the opposition 3-0 loss.
A massive lesson to learn – start stronger next game Rossett last Semi-Final of the season!
