29 Jun 2018 | Posted In Sport

On Monday 25 June 2018, 350 supporters from St John Fisher travelled to St George’s Park to witness a truly historic day. The Year 7 Girls’ Football team were crowned National Champions after a beating Gordano School 1-0 in a nail biting grand finale.

St John Fisher’s road to the final had seen them play teams across the length and breadth of the Country as they annihilated Whitcliffe Mount, Rossett, Nunthorpe Academy, Laurence Jackson, Ponteland, Crompton House, defending champions Thomas Telford, scoring at least three goals in each game totalling 27 goals scored on the way and only conceding two! The final was perfectly poised between St John Fisher and Gordano School who had recently won the under 13, 5-a-side National Finals. With an outstanding disciplined and courageous team performance the girls held on to their 1-0 lead and were crowned the best team in the country, a truly astonishing achievement.

The whole of Year 7 came to support and were truly magnificent on the day. Not only have they worked tirelessly with their fundraising efforts to enable them to get here, but they generated an incredible atmosphere and showed how proud they are to be ‘Fishers’ with their St John Fisher chants and acts of support, a spine tingling moment for everyone involved. This atmosphere and knowing the players had the backing of over 350 St John Fisher students, staff and parents gave the players the belief, determination and extra energy to hold on to their lead. The stadium erupted and the celebrations began with a very fitting and emotional trophy presentation which saw the players be presented with their awards in front of their 350 St John Fisher fans.

Thank you to all of the students, parents, staff, PTA and sponsors who made this happen, not only are we crowned Champions of England but the school and everyone that witnessed the final, have memories that will last a lifetime.

St John Fisher are now officially the first school in the History of Harrogate and North Yorkshire to be crowned National Football Champions in any of the boys or girls competitions. This is a truly astonishing achievement for the school and it is down to everyone at St John Fisher for their passion, unity and dedication. We are delighted that we can enable the legendary Mr Knowles and Mrs Langstaff to end their chapter at St John Fisher on a high as National Champions, as their dedication to St John Fisher and their support for the Girls’ Football teams have been incredible. They will be sincerely missed.

This accolade and the whole school effort to get to the final typifies what a fantastic school community we have and that we are simply ‘Proud to be Fishers’.
